  • Description

The Libyan Prime Minister, Major Adbel Salam Jalloud, arrived at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Thursday (14 February) for talks with President Pompidou on securing steady supplies of oil for France.

According to officials Major Jalloud was proposing an oil contract in return for French economic investment in Libya and further French arms sales.

Major Jalloud would like France to help set up a petro-chemical industry, boild refineries, and give agricultural assistance. Tripoli is also suggesting that France constructs nuclear power stations in Libya.

Major Jalloud talked with President Pompidou for 85 minutes. Later the possibility of arms deliveries was examined in detail when he met the French defence Minister M. Robert Galley.

If the co-operation pact between Libya and France is signed it could come close to rivalling the massive 1250 million sterling (300 million US dollars) agreement signed last weekend between France and Iran.

The negotiations with Libya follow immediately the Washington energy conference where French Foreign Minister Michel Jobert defended the French determination to push ahead with bilateral trade-for-oil deals.
