Background: Italian students took to the streets recently to demonstrate their support for the cause of the American Red Indian. The students, in full Red Indian regalia, marched on the offices of the United States, Consulate in Milan.
SYNOPSIS: The Indians are claiming that bills currently going through the United States Congress are designed to overturn Indian treaties and deny them fishing, grazing and mineral rights.
The Indians intend converging on Washington this weekend (15-19 July), where they hope to set up an encampment of tepees.
But,for the students in Milan, the demonstration in support of the American Indians had another significance. For Italian university students, disenchanted with both their education and prospects of getting a job, have adopted the Indian as a symbol of their rejection of Western society.
The students have taken to wearing Red Indian costumes and call themselves 'proletarian Indians'. It is not uncommon during Italian political demonstrations to see your people covered in war paint and shouting Indian battle cries.
