Football fans joined the players on the field in Boston on Sunday (16 August) as the stands caught fire. Early in the game between Boston and Washington, fire broke out under the wooden planks of the stands and the quickest way of escape was out onto the field.
The game was help up for 22 minutes as players and fans milled about the field while firemen fought the blaze. The men who sell peanuts and popcorn joined the crowd on the field when they realised their business had moved.
There were no injuries and the fans took the unintended halt in play without panicking. Finally, when the fire was extinguished, the fans returned to their seats in the 92-degree Fahrenheit heat (33.3 degrees Centigrade) and the game resumed.
In the end, Boston lost the match.
