    THE CITY'S MAYOR, SHINZO HAMAI, IN A MESSAGE TO THE GATHERING, SAID THE WORLD MUST BE PRESERVED FROM STRIFE AND UNTOLD MISERY.ALL SHOULD REDOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS, HE SAID, IN THE CAUSE OF PEACE.

    YESTERDAY'S MEMORIAL SERVICE FOLLOWED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE SIGNING OF THE PARTIAL NUCLEAR TEST BAN TREATY IN MOSCOW.AT 8.15 A.M., THE MOMENT THE ATOM BOMB WAS DROPPED ON AUGUST 6, 1945, A MINUTE'S SILENCE WAS OBSERVED.WREATHS WERE LAID AT THE BASE OF THE ATOMIC BOMB MEMORIAL.

    HIROSHIMA IS CURRENTLY PLAYING HOST TO THE 9TH WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST ATOM AND HYDROGEN BOMBS, WHICH IN THE PAST 48 HOURS HAS OPENLY SPLIT INTO SQUABBLING FACTIONS.THERE HAS BEEN TENSION BETWEEN SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS AND THE SOVIET AND CHINESE DELEGATION.

    HIROSHIMA ITSELF HAS BEEN REBUILT FROM THE WILDERNESS CREATED BY THE BOMB.IT IS NOW JAPAN'S ELEVENTH LARGEST CITY WITH A POPULATION OF ALMOST HALF A MILLION.
