Background: Two agreements for Egyptian-Romanian co-operation were the outcome of a three day visit to Egypt -- ending on Friday (13 May) -- by Romanian President Nicolai Ceausescu, according to foreign ministry officials in Cairo. Details of the agreements were not immediately available. President Ceausescu was given a warm welcome in Cairo, and his official engagements started almost immediately.

President Sadat has accepted President Ceausescu's invitation to visit Romania at a date to be fixed latter, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi said. Other topics covered in the talks between the two Presidents were the African situation, ways of improving strained Soviet-Egyptian relations and ways of boosting bilateral economic relations, informed sources said. According to economic officials in Cairo, both sides agreed to establish a maritime company to help boost two-way trade.

SYNOPSIS: When he arrived on Wednesday (11 May) the Romanian leader visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Egyptian capital.

Two officers from the Republican Guard held the large wreath which was to be laid at the tomb by the Romanian President in honour of Egypt's war dead.

President Ceausescu's visit was seen as an important one particularly because of Romania's relations with Israel. For Romania was the only Communist country to maintain economic and diplomatic links with Israel following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

President Ceausescu and his wife attended a banquet in their honour on Wednesday night, given by President and Mrs. Sadat at the Kubbeh Palace in Cairo.

One of the main topics in talks between the two Presidents was the search for Middle East peace, and this was the theme of a speech at the banquet by Mr. Ceausescu. The official Middle East news agency quoted him as saying it was for the Palestine Liberation Organisation to participate in a reconvened Geneva peace conference.
