  • Description

Paris -- King Hussein of Jordan became the first Arab ruler to visit France since the end of the Algerian war when his plane touched down at Orly airport, near Paris, on November 17th.

Waiting to greet him and his British-born wife Princess Mouna was President De Gaulle and a group of V.I.P's which included Madame De Gaulle and prime minister Georges Pompidou. The welcoming ceremony included troop detachments, arrays of flags, a regimental band, and a booming gun salute. The King was visibly moved.

The royal couple were escorted by the French president by motorcade into the centre of Paris, where they went straight to their residence at the Palais d'Orsay. Shortly afterwards the King met De Gaulle in the president's study in the Elysee Palace. A luncheon in their honour was given later.

Diplomatic sources said Hussein spoke to De Gaulle as the spokesman for all Arab governments after being asked to do so by the members of the Arab summit conference held in Cairo earlier in the year. It was indicated that the king would try to put before De Gaulle the Arab side of the Palestine question, though he know he would be unable to sway France from her resolve to ensure a status quo there. He also realised, according to the sources, that he would be unable to influence France's policy of friendship with Israel.

But it was also indicated that Hussein would seek to buy French mirage fighters for his air force - at present equipped with obsolescent British-built Hunter planes. Observers pointed out that among the King's 15-strong retinue were General Amer Khammash, chief of the organisation and planning section of the general staff, and Lt-Colonel Salih Alkurdi, commander in chief of the Jordanian air force.
