  • Description

THE LONDON CLUB TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR ACHIEVED THEIR THIRD WIN IN THEIR PAST FIVE HOMES GAMES WHEN THEY DEFEATED LEICESTER CITY BY TWO GOALS TO NIL AT WHITE HART LANE TODAY (SATURDAY).

THE HIGHLY ENTERTAINING MATCH BEGAN WITH REPEATED SPURS ASSAULTS ON THE LEICESTER GOAL. BUT THERE WAS NO FINISH TO THE ATTACKS AND ONLY JIM ROBERTS, ON THE SPURS RIGHT-WING, LOOKED DANGEROUS. FIVE TIMES IN THE FIRST 15 MINUTES ROBERTS CRASHED THE BALL AT GORDON BANKS, ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP KEEPER, BUT BANKS DENIED SPURS A GOAL.

AFTER THIRTY MINUTES SPURS WENT AHEAD WITH A MAGNIFICENT MOVE BY JIMMY GREAVES. HE TOOK A SHORT CORNER AND THE BALL WAS KICKED HIGH INTO THE GOAL-MOUTH. BANKS PUSHED THE BALL CLEAR WHERE GREAVES, RUNNING IN, KICKED THIGH INTO THE CORNER OF THE NET. IT WAS TOO MUCH EVEN FOR BANKS.

LEICESTER MAY NOT BE ONE OF THE MOST GLAMOROUS SIDES IN THE ENGLISH FIRST DIVISION BUT THEY KNOW HOW TO HIT BACK. THEY KEPT THE HOME DEFENCE AT FULL STRETCH AND OFTEN LOOKED DANGEROUS.

SPURS SEDON GOAL CAME FOUR MINUTES FROM THE INTERVAL. SPURS MADE A FAST ATTACK AND GILZEAN CENTRED. LEICESTER DEFENDER RODRIGUES CAME BACK FAST AND TRIED TO HEAD THE BALL AWAY FOR A CORNER, HOWEVER HE MISJUDGED THE FLIGHT AND HEADED THE BALL INTO HIS WON GOAL.

ALTHOUGH LEICESTER SAW MORE OF THE GAME IN THE SECOND HALF THEY NEVER LOOKED LIKE BEATING SPURS WHO ARE SEVENTH IN THE FIRST DIVISION TABLE - ONE PLACE BEHIND LEICESTER.
