Background: THE KING AND QUEEN OF MALAYSIA ARRIVED IN KUCHING, THE CAPITAL OF SARAWAK, ON NOVEMBER 23 ON AN OFFICIAL VISIT. IT'S THEIR FIRST TOUR OF MALAYSIA'S BORNEO STATES SINCE THE NATION CAME INTO EXISTENCE A LITTLE OVER TWELVE MONTHS AGO.

SARAWAK IS AT PRESENT IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY BECAUSE OF INDONESIAN CONFRONTATION, BUT IT'S ALSO FACING INTERNAL SECURITY DIFFICULTIES STRICT SECURITY MEASURES WERE TAKEN AS THE ROYAL AIRCRAFT FLEW INTO KUCHING AIRPORT, WHICH IS ONLY TWENTY-EIGHT MILES FROM INDONESIAN BORDER.

THE KING AND QUEEN RODE IN A CALVACADE OF CARS THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE TOWN PAST THOUSANDS OF CHEERING PEOPLE TO PANGKALAN BATU, ON THE BANK OF SARAWAK BORDER. SCHOOLCHILDREN WERE OUT IN BIG NUMBERS CHEERFULLY WAVING THEIR COLOURFUL PAPER FLAGS.

AMONG THE OFFICIALS WHO WELCOMED THE ROYAL COUPLE WAS THE IBAN PARAMOUNT CHIEF TEMENGGONG JUGAH, MALAYSIAN MINISTER FOR SARAWAK AFFAIRS, WHOSE TRADITIONAL LONG HAIR SET HIM APART FROM THE FORMAL EUROPEAN DRESS OF THE JUDGES, POLICEMEN AND ARMY OFFICERS.

AFTER A BRIEF OF A GROUP GUARD OF HONOUR AND HEARING LOYAL ADDRESS FROM THE ACTING CHIEF MINISTER, MR. JAMES WONG, THE KING AND QUEEN WERE PADDLED ACROSS THE SARAWAK RIVER TO THE ASTANA, THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE IN KUCHING, AND FORMER HOME OF THE WHITE RAJAHS.
