Background: The London International Boat Show opened at Earl's Court on Wednesday (6 January) with British manufacturers making a strong bid for international attention. In the last 20 years, the boat building business in Britain has lost over half its market to competition from overseas. This year's exhibition has a large range of small cruisers for the family to luxury launchers in the millionaire class - all designed and built in Britain. The most expensive of these is the Powles 50, a British yacht costing GBP200,000 sterling. But there is also a do-it-yourself boat kit which is priced at GBP140.
