  • Description

THE MACUMBA DANCERS OF BRAZIL, LED BY ONE OF THEIR PRIESTESSES, HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING ONE OF THE FEAST DAYS OF THE MACUMBA CALENDAR. THE HIGH PRIESTESS IS MARIA DO CARMO.

LIKE VOODOOISM, MACUMBA BORROWS ELEMENTS OF CHRISTIANITY AND WEDS THEM TO THE OLDER BELIEFS OF THE SLAVES WHO WERE BROUGHT FROM AFRICA BY THE PORTUGUESE WHO SETTLED IN BRAZIL.

CHRISTIAN AND PAGAN IDENTITIES BECOME MIXED AS CHRISTIAN SAINTS HAVE THEIR PERSONALITIES AND ATTRIBUTES MERGED WITH THOSE OF OLDER GODS.

THIS FESTIVAL WAS PART OF THE ANNUAL SERIES OF MACUMBA RITES WHICH CULMINATE IN THE GREAT FESTIVAL OF IEMANJA, GODDESS OF THE SEA, WHICH TAKES PLACE AT MIDNIGHT ON DECEMBER 31.

DURING THE RITES SOME OF THE DANCERS, MOVED BY THE SPIRIT OF MACUMBA, GO OFF INTO A TRANCE. IN THIS STATE THE PRIESTESS, MARIA DO CARMO, IS SAID TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH THE DEAD.
