  • Description

At an unusual summer camp in Israeli-occupied territory, local Jordanian Arab youngsters have been enjoying leisure facilities unaffected by Arab-Israeli tensions.

The camp is run by Israel's welfare Ministry with help from the Swedish Relief Organisation, and is located on land abandoned by the arabs in the first Israel-Arab war of 1948. But the youngsters enjoy their summer camp as they would any other, and politics do not intrude.

The Arab boys are supervised by Israeli teachers. Some youngsters travel to the camp every day -- others sleep overnight.

The Arab notables of occupied towns and villages come to visit the camp, and are received by the Israeli authorities.

The Israelis hope that a camp like this will help bridge the gap of bitterness that exists on the political level between Arab and Jew.

On another level, this is just a Summer camp where children are having fun.
