In Segovia, Spain on Friday night (29 October), the World Boxing Council's (WBC) junior welterweight champion, Miguel Velazquez of Spain, defended his title against Thailand's Sansaek Muangsurin.

SYNOPSIS: Sansaek lost the tile in Madrid last June when he was disqualified for low punching as Velazquez, who had been clearly outclassed in that fight, lay stricken on the canvas.

Friday's fight started slowly with the Thai boxes stalking his opponent. The Spaniard, keeping his distance with feeble jabs and Sansaek, dominated the centre of the ring.

However, the second round began with the Thai moving in on Velazquez, swinging wildly and attacking all the time. Sansaek repeatedly hit the champion with punches from both hands, and put him on the canvas for a compulsory eight count with a vicious left hook.

The referee then decided that the official doctor should examine Velazquez and see if he was fit to continue.

The doctor decided that the Spaniard was alright and allowed the fight to continue.

Velazquez barely had time to recover from that punch before he was put down again by another hard punch. From then on the Spaniard, a veteran of 73 fights and nine year's Sansaek's senior, was reduced to the role of a human punching bag as he tried to avoid the Thai's heavy punching. The referee stopped the fight in the second round as Velazquez crumpled to the canvas for the fourth time, to give Sansaek his title back.
