  • Description

A LIVE MAGNETIC MINE THAT HAD BEEN DANGLING FROM THE BOWS OF A BRITISH TANKER FOR MORE THAN 24--HOURS WAS SUCCESSFULLY DISLODGED TODAY (THURSDAY). THE TANKER - THE 24,000 TON "ESSO WINCHESTER" - WAS RAISING ANCHOR OFF FLUSHING, ON THE DUTCH COAST YESTERDAY, WHEN THE MINE CAME UP AS WELL, WEDGED BETWEEN FLUKES OR SPIKES OF THE ANCHOR.

TODAY (THURSDAY) DUTCH NAVAL EXPERTS TRIED AGAIN TO DISLODGE THE LETHAL MISSILE - THEIR EFFORTS YESTERDAY HAD BEEN FRUSTRATED BY BAD WEATHER. THEY FOUND THAT THEY COULD NOT REMOVE THE DETONATOR SO THEY ATTACHED A LINE TO THE BOMB, HOPING TO LOWER IT SLOWLY WITH THE ANCHOR AND DRAW IT FREE.

BUT AGAIN THINGS DID NOT WORK OUT AS THEY PLANNED - THE LINE SNAPPED AND THE MINE WITH 15-HUNDRED POUNDS OF EXPLOSIVE SANK TO THE BOTTOM. DIVERS WENT DOWN, BUT WERE UNSUCCESSFUL IN ATTEMPTS TO DEFUSE IT. THEY'LL BE TRYING AGAIN TOMORROW.
