  • Description

LORD HAREWOOD ARRIVING BY AIR IN DAKAR AND SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN (S.O.F.)

TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "CAN YOU TELL US WHAT'S THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS FESTIVAL?"

LORD HAREWOOD: "I'LL TELL YOU IN FOUR WEEKS TIME. WHETHER I CAN TELL YOU AT THE MOMENT I DON'T KNOW. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL HERE TO FIND OUT, I THINK."

INTERVIEWER: "IS THERE ANY SPECIAL MEANING YOU CAN REALLY SAY FROM THE FESTIVAL?"

LORD HAREWOOD: "I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING WE'RE CERTAINLY GOING TO FIND OUT IN THE COURSE OF THE NEXT FOUR WEEKS, DON'T YOU? I THINK THAT'S ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN. I THINK THE REMAINDER OF THE WORLD HAS HAD TREMENDOUS INFLUENCE FROM AFRICAN ARTS IN THE LAST - WHAT? -- TWO GENERATIONS? CONSCIOUSLY AND, RATHER LONGER THAN THAT, LESS CONSCIOUSLY. AND CERTAINLY FOR THE LAST 20 OR 30 YEARS ABSOLUTELY CONSCIOUSLY. AND I THINK EVERYONE WHO COMES HERE IS GOING TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THIS INFLUENCE BECAUSE OF THE CONCENTRATION. AND I'M SPEAKING ONLY AS A EUROPEAN. THAT'S SELFISH POINT OF VIEW. THE INFLUENCE, AFTER ALL, THE SUM OF THESE VERY ANCIENT ARTS WILL ADD UP TO SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND PARTICULAR, AND SOMETHING VERY LARGE. I THINK NOBODY DOUBTS THAT."
