  • Description

In spite of a strike by court workers in Buenos Aires on Monday (29 December) a corruption case against former political strongman Jose Lopez Rega continued in the Argentine capital.

While hundreds of the strikers gathered in Congress square, the case continued at the nearby Palace of Justice with Judge Alfredo Nochetti Fazzolino presiding. But Senor Rega was not present.

Senor Rega, formerly a top aide of President Maria Estela Peron and now living in her Madrid mansion in Spain, was summoned to appear in connection with charges involving alleged misuse and embezzlement of public funds.

Instead, his daughter, Norma, arrived at the court and told the judge her father was unable to make the long trip from Spain because of a diabetic condition.

Senor Rega held the posts of Social Welfare Minister and Private Secretary to President Person. He wielded almost unlimited power until he was forced out of office by labour leaders and the military last July. He then fled to Madrid.

If Senor Rega returns to Argentina he will probably be placed in preventive detention while the Judge continues his investigation.
