  • Description

The four hijackers who seized a Chilean airliner while it was on a domestic flight, and forced it to fly to Peru, have been granted political asylum by venezuela. They had landed in Lima, the capital of Peru, to demand food and fuel to fly on to Venezuela itself, but eventually agreed to surrender after lengthy negotiations with Peruvian Government ministers. They were put under the immediate protection of the Venezuelan Embassy in Lima after the negotiations on the hijacked aircraft itself.

SYNOPSIS: Some of the hijacked passengers who were released soon after the Boeing 727 landed at Lima on Tuesday (5 July) said the hijackers, three men and a woman, were armed with an incendiary bomb and pistols. The aircraft with 68 on board was on an internal flight to Santiago, the Chilean capital, when the hijackers took over, forcing it to fly to Peru-where they intended refuelling for the flight to Venezuela. Soon after landing in Lima they released 18 passengers, mostly woman and children. Peru's minister of the Interior Senor Luis Cisneros Vizquerra, and the minister for Foreign Affairs, Senor Jose De La Puente Robdill, quickly arrived at the scene with the police commissioner, and began negotiations over the hijackers demands.

After eight long hours of talks in which the hijackers said they staged the drama to force the release of two political prisoners being held in Chile, surrender terms were agreed. The hijackers left the aircraft under armed police escort, and were placed under Venezuelan Embassy protection pending their request for asylum in Venezuela itself to be discussed. The decision to grant them asylum came the following day, and the Peruvian authorities granted the hijackers safe conduct out of the country.

The hijacked passengers and aircraft were flown back to Santiago shortly after the drama ended.
