    Regarding future co-operation, the Sudanese delegation emphasised the high priority of: Port Suakin; construction of storage facilities; the Busseri Bridge; vocational training and social affairs projects, particularly those related to women. West Germany also indicated its willingness to grant up to 133 scholarships in professional, non-academic fields, to Sudanese candidates for the 1978-79 period.

    Background: As a result of negotiations in Khartoum, which lasted from Sunday until Tuesday (16 to 18 April), West Germany has agreed to ogive Sudan financial and technical aid worth more than 55 million dollars. The negotiations came as a result of a meeting of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva last month. then, it was agreed that aid should be given in the form of grants rather than loans, and Sudan is the first recipient under the new arrangement.

    SYNOPSIS: The agreement was signed by Herr Winfried Boll from the West German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, and the Sudanese minister of Planning, Nasr El Din Mustafa. Under the agreement, of the almost 40 million dollars made available for the financial programme, 10 million dollars will be used for the electrification of the towns of Karima and Merowe. A further 10 million will be tied to supplies from West Germany. The technical co-operation includes an agricultural pilot project in the Nuba Mountains, engineering design for the new port of Suakin, the improvement of health services, and the immediate delivery of generators for the Public Electricity and Water Corporation.
