Background: The first of three new formula One grand prix racing cars was announced on Thursday (18 September). It was the latest John Player Special Formula One car which was shown for the first time in London, at a preview press showing on Wednesday (17 September).
Developed in the Lotus Car Works in Norfolk, U.K., under the personal supervision of millionaire car designer Colin Chapman, the black and gold racer will carry the 19th challenge for world championship honours with driver Ronnie Peterson of Sweden.
The car replaces the Ralph Bellamy designed JPS which despite its revolutionary push button clutch arrangement, claimed little success in the 1975 season dominated by Ferrari of Italy.
The most noticeable feature of the new are is the massive ventilated disc brakes mounted away from the wheels on the front axle. There is no longer room in the 13 inch diameter wheels for brakes of the size required for a car of such power. It can reach speed at 160 miles an hour (220 kph).
At the rear end, the stabilisation wing is an integrated support which doubles as a gear box oil cooler and houses the rear light and auxiliary battery socket.
The new cars may be ready for the American Grand Prix, final race of the 1975 season in October. Otherwise, they should make their first appearance in 1976 in Argentina.
