  • Description

THE ANNUAL "ORANGES AND LEMONS" SERVICE AT THE CHURCH OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE -- ST. CLEMENT DANES, IN LONDON'S STRAND, - WAS HELD THIS AFTERNOON (THURSDAY).

THE SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY THE RESIDENT CHAPLAIN, THE REV. LEONARD ASHTON, AND THE PREACHER WAS THE VENERABLE W. E. G. PAYTON, CHAPLAIN-IN-CHIEF OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.

MEMBERS OF THE LONDON COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF CHANGE RINGERS RANG THE TUNE OF THE FAMOUS NURSERY RHYME ON HANDBELLS, AND CHILDREN FROM ST. CLEMENT DANES PRIMARY SCHOOL IN DRURY LANE SANG THE TUNE. THE CHILDREN WERE LATER GIVEN ORANGES AND LEMONS BY THE OFFICIATING CLERGY.

THE FRUIT WAS PRESENTED BY A LARGE PLANTATION IN THE SOVEREIGN BASE AREA OF AKROTIRI, CYPRUS, ONLY A FEW MILES FROM THE LARGE ROYAL AIR FORCE CAMP THERE. THE SAME PLANTATION HAS SUPPLIED THE FRUIT FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

THE "ORANGES AND LEMONS" NURSERY RHYME IS SYMBOLIC OF THE ANCIENT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE BELLS OF THE WREN CHURCH AND THE LANDING OF FRUIT AT THE NEARBY THAMES STREET WHARVES.
