    THE BRITISH AUTHOR'S COMMENT ON WAKING UP THIS MORNING WAS, ACCORDING TO MR SEARLE: "OH HELL, ANOTHER BIRTHDAY!" BY BREAKFAST TIME, ABOUT 1,000 LETTERS, TELEGRAMS AND PARCELS HAD BEEN DELIVERED TO HIS HOME.

    ON SIR WINSTON'S DEATH, HE WAS REPORTED AS SAYING: "IN THE LONELINESS OF MY EXTREME OLD AGE, IT HAD ALWAYS BEEN A COMFORT TO KNOW THAT SIR WINSTON AND I WERE THE SAME AGE AND PROBABLY SHARING THE SAME PROBLEMS. NOW HE HAS GONE, AND WE HAVE LOST THE GREATEST MAN OF OUR TIME, AND I HAVE LOST A VERY OLD FRIEND."
