SYNOPSIS: This year's gathering was held at Gadelone, in Central Niger. Sixty thousand men and women travelled long distances to take part.

This year, the Fulani had cause, for special celebrations...the selection of a new chief. The importance of the festival has been recognised by the central government which provided not only much of the finance needed, but also contributed 20 tons of millet to help feed the visitors who poured into the area.

The Fulani make up nearly half a million of Niger's four million population. They are mostly herdsmen, breeding horned cattle and oxen. One of the concerns of the present government is to improve the numbers and quality of their herds. The tribesman, who express much of their history in dance, also use it to express their thanks. This year, the Government was honoured in this way.

The tribes people paid tribute to the government's efforts to improve their quality of life, and to foster closer links between the many tribes that make up the nation.
