  • Description

Two senior Roman Catholic prelates from the United States are on a seven-day visit to Hungary, as guests of the Hungarian Catholic Church-with full approval of the Hungarian Government. Hungarian Catholics are the nation's biggest religious community, and the visit was officially approved in line with the Hungarian Government's policy of seeking closer ties with the United States.

SYNOPSIS: At Budapest airport on Wednesday (21 September) were Primate of Hungary, Cardinal Lazlo Lekai, on the right, and Dr. Jozef Cserhati, a senior Archbishop. Leading the U.S. delegation was the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Cardinal John Kroll, with Archbishop Joseph Bernardin of Cincinnati. Their visit came two weeks after American evangelist Billy Graham was in Hungary.

Cardinal Kroll arranged this visit, following the recent steady improvement in relations between the communist Hungarian Government and the Catholic Church, which claims the support of two-thirds of the country's ten million people. The United States Government also approved the visit. U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Joseph Kaiser was also at the airport to greet the two prelates. Cardinal Lekai and Cardinal Kroll expressed their 'joy' and 'delight' at the visit.
