  • Description

Malawi on Thursday (6 July) celebrated her first anniversary as a republic. The highlight was a full programme at Blantyre's central sports stadium before a capacity crowd of 40,000 exuberant Malawians together with President Hastings Banda, and the official guest of honour, Sir Seretse Khama, President of Botswana, and Lady Khama.

President Banda and his guests watched traditional dancing, youth displays, a football match between English third division club Oldham Athletic and the Malawi national eleven--Oldham won three goas to two -- a mock battle staged by the Malawi rifles and a fireworks display.

President Banda told the vast crowd that he had returned to Malawi in 1958 as a bridge across the disunity between the African people and the Europeans.

He still maintained that attitude and refused to hate anyone because he or she had a white skin. "That," he added, "is why I refuse to boycott South Africa, Rhodesia and Mozambique."
President Banda said he was greatly honoured by the presence of Sir Seretse Khama and his wife.

Tribal dancers were also assured by President Banda that their dance were not sinful and they would not go to hell and burn for dancing them as the missionaries had maintained.

If anyone was going to burn for dancing, he said, it would be those Europeans and Americans he had seen overseas dancing with each others wives and husbands. If anything was sinful it was this, he declared.
