    NEW ZEALAND'S NATIONAL PARTY HAS BEEN RETURNED TO POWER FOLLOWING LAST SATURDAY'S (NOVEMBER 30), GENERAL ELECTION WITH A CLEAR MANDATE TO GOVERN FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS. IN A POLL WHICH DREW MORE THAN 82 PER CENT OF ELIGIBLE VOTERS, THE NATIONAL PARTY WON 44 SEATS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

    THE OPPOSITION LABOUR PARTY WON 35-SEATS IN THE 80 SEAT SINGLE CHAMBER PARLIAMENT, WHILE THE SOCIAL CREDIT PARTY WON A SINGLE SEAT; ITS FIRST EVER IN THE NEW ZEALAND LEGISLATURE.

    COMMENTING ON THE POLL, NEW ZEALAND'S CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER SAID THAT VOTING HAD BEEN ABOUT AVERAGE, BUT ADDED THAT THE COUNTING OF ABSENTEE AND POSTAL VOTES BY THE END OF THIS WEEK WOULD LIFT THE PERCENTAGE VOTE TO ABOUT 90 PER CENT.

    IN THE ELECTION, THE NATIONAL PARTY LOST TWO SEATS, WHILE THE LITERAL AND COMMUNIST PARTIES FAILED IN ALL 23 CONSTITUENCIES THEY CONTESTED.
