Background: Following the current practise of NATO nations, the new German Luftwaffe held an "Open Day" at the Buchel airbase on Sunday, November 10, when the airfield was opened to the public to show the progress of the German force.

Bad weather hampered the flying programme and the majority of the aerial events led to be cancelled - including a number of acrobatic flights by famous NATO teams.

Taking advantage of the lack of aerial activity, our cameraman took the opportunity to take a short flight over the airfield in one of the Luftwaffe's American helicopters.

Flying down the main runway, he filmed an impressive line-up of the first jet fighter-bomber squadron on parade. There are 70 of these aircraft based on this airfield and they share duties with the helicopters and Dernier De 27 training aircraft.

Missiles of the future were represented at the show by the American Air Force Matador rocket - one of many guided missiles with which NATO forces are currently armed.
