  • Description

VISNEWS filmed the Kariba Dam June 22 as Sir Roy Welensky, Premier of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, laid the last yard of concrete completing the 420ft high wall of the gigantic dam.

Sir Roy ???y Welensky and Federal Power Board Chairman Duncan Anderson were welcomed on the site by leading officials responsible for the construction of the dam.

After a short address by Mr.Anderson who is in charge of the whole GBP80 million project, the Premier spoke of the four-year struggle which was now to be crowned by success. Sir Roy said; "Only 2 1/2 years have passed since Lord Malvern poured the first concrete in the foundations. Floods of exceptional force later impeded the work. Nevertheless, it has been completed ahead of schedule, one of the greatest and most difficult civil engineering works ever carried out in the whole world."
Then Sir Roy pulled a cord which inverted a bucket of concrete, the last skip, suspended on a steel cable. Twelve tons of concrete poured into the great wall blocking the Zambesi river.

Work is now starting on the small coffer dams on both banks of the river. A second stage power house at Kariba will be completed within the next few years at an expenditure of many more million pounds.

Within seven months power from the dam will be delivered to the chopper mines of Northern Rhodesia.
