  • Description

SNOW AND FLOODS LIE AHEAD OF COMPETITORS SETTING OUT TODAY (SUNDAY) IN THE SIX-DAY INTERNATIONAL CAR RALLY ORGANISED BY THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB IN BRITAIN.

FOR THE BRITISH DRIVERS AMONG THE 165 CREWS, THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL CHALLENGE - THEY HAVE NOT WON THE EVENT SINCE 1959. SINCE THAN IT HAS BEEN DECIDED ON FOREST TRACKS RATHER THAN ON ROADS, AND THE SWEDES HAVE DOMINATED WITH THEIR FOREST DRIVING EXPERIENCE.

ERIK CARLSSON WON IT THREE TIMES AND HE IS TAKING PART AGAIN THIS YEAR. TOM TRANA, ANOTHER SWEDE, WINNER FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS HAS WITHDRAWN WITH THE REST OF HIS VOLVO TEAM, AND NOW IT IS THE FINNISH DRIVERS WHO THREATEN TO MAINTAIN THE SCANDINAVIAN SUPREMACY.

THE ROUTE TAKES THEM OVER 2,500 MILES (OVER 4000 KMS) - THROUGH SOUTHWEST ENGLAND, WALES, THE LAKE DISTRICT AND THEN TO SCOTLAND AND BACK TO LONDON.

THE EVENT IS THE LAST OF 12 COUNTING FOR THE 1965 EUROPEAN RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN CLINCHED BY THE FINNISH DRIVER, RAUNO AALTONEN, SEEN HERE IN CAR FIVE.

RENE TRAUTMANN OF FRANCE IS SECOND AND TIMO MAKINEN, SEEN IN CAR TWO, IS LYING THIRD. ANOTHER FAMOUS NAME IN MOTOR RACING - GRAHAM HILL. THIS TIME HE WAS HARD AT WORK, WIELDING THE STARTERS' FLAG.
