    THE TWO-DAY CONGRESS OF THE SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL OPENED TODAY (SATURDAY) IN WEST BERLIN WITH A SPEECH BY DR. BRUNO PITTERMAN, THE AUSTRALIA CHAIRMAN. THE MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL -- WHICH COMPRISES 52 LABOUR AND SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTIES -- IS BEING HELD BEHIND CLOSED DOORS IN WEST BERLIN'S CONGRESS HALL.

    IN HIS SPEECH, DR. PITTERMAN CALLED FOR CLOSER COOPERATION AMONG EUROPE'S DEMOCRATIC PARTIES.

    HE SAID: "WE REGRET THAT THE QUESTION OF CLOSER COOPERATION AMONG EUROPE'S DEMOCRATIC FORCES IS STAGNATING."
    DR. PITTERMAN SAID HE HOPED THAT NOT ONLY THE SOCIALIST, BUT ALSO THE OTHER DEMOCRATIC PARTIES OF EUROPE REALISED THIS PROBLEM SO THAT NECESSARY WORK COULD BE STARTED.

    THE FIRST GUEST WAS WEST BERLIN'S GOVERNING MAYOR, HERR KLAUS SCHUETZ.

    AMONG THOSE ATTENDING THE CONGRESS IS THE WEST GERMAN MINISTER FOR ALL-GERMAN AFFAIRS, HERR HERBERT WEHNER.

    THE CONGRESS IS TO DISCUSS FOREIGN POLICY QUESTIONS, INCLUDING THE SITUATION IN CENTRAL EUROPE FOLLOWING THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

    THE WEST GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, HERR WILLY BRANDT, WHO IS ALSO CHAIRMAN OF THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY, WILL JOIN THE CONGRESS TOMORROW (SUNDAY) TO SPEAK ON THE CURRENT WORLD POLITICAL SITUATION.
