Democrat President-elect of the U.S. John Kennedy arrived at the Georgetown Hospital, Washington, during the night of Nov 24-25 to see the son born to his wife by Caesarean birth a few hours earlier.
Mr. Kennedy was on his way back to a vacation in Palm Beach Florida, after spending Thanksgiving Day Nov 24 with his wife at their home in the fashionable suburb of Georgetown - it is older than the capital itself - when news was flashed to Palm Beach that his wife had been taken to hospital.
Mr. Kennedy thus flew back by the same quickly-refuelled plane and while he was still in the air was told by radio telephone of the birth of their son - three weeks ahead of schedule.
With such personal preoccupations crowding his mind, the President-elect landed in Washington, sped by car to the hospital, hastened down a long hospital corridor while photographers' lighting blazed and reporters trailed in his wake.
He had a wide smile as he left. Mother and son - to be named John Kennedy Junior - were doing 'fine'.
