    SOF STARTS: "For the Cubans......

    SOF OUT: ....carry fire power."

"For the Cubans, even if they had 20-thousand troops..for them to divide the 20-thousand into sight or nine towns, it will be impossible for them to control the towns. Secondly, people living in the towns have been mainly UNITA people not MPLA people and these, of course, have been the casualties of this war. Because the line of demarcation was not just in terms of military but also political terms. So MPLA did not have sympathisers below the eleventh parallel and also UNITA did not have sympathisers above the eleventh parallel. So therefore if our own sympathisers are not going to remain in town because what we are trying to tell them is to disperse and go to the villages, the question of how the Cubans and Russians are going to run eight or nine thousand of the local population. So therefore we think that it is not really a major setback....it's a very minor one, it's a temporary one and we have to face this because now the struggle is really polarised between Cuban and Russian forces against UNITA. And also, we are going to establish definite lines of defence from which we are going to attack the Cubans wherever they are. The planes that we mentioned in fact are our friend's planes and we can assure you that helicopters are coming so that one day when you are going to be in Huambo you may see some helicopters under UNITA's control flying around and definitely, they are going to be in action against MPLA positions.

REPORTER: What kind of helicopters will they be?

SANGUMBA: When you go to Silva Porto, you are going to see clearly the mark.

REPORTER: Will they carry troops or will they carry fire power?

SANGUMBA: They will carry troops and they will carry firepower.

Background: Jorge Sangumba, "Foreign Secretary" of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola), said in Zambia on Tuesday (10 February) that UNITA forces will establish lines of defence from which they will attack "the Cubans wherever they are".

He said the struggle in Angola is now really polarised between the Cubans and Russians on one side and UNITA fores on the other.

Mr. Sangumba declared that even if the Cubans had 20-thousand troops in Angola and divided these among the main towns, it would be impossible for them to control the towns.

He added that in any case, the people living in the towns are mainly supporters of UNITA.

UNITA is claiming that it has the support of the three million people of Southern Angola, plus a large proportion of the people in the centre of the country.

It says this will force the MPLA and its Cuban and Soviet supporters to function as little more than a harassed army of occupation.
