    Background: Delhi's 'Divali' Festival of Lights was as gay as ever this year -- but not so noisy as in the past. The local authorities put a ban on the sale of 'Atomic Bombs' and other fire-crackers so that the traditional festival did not go with its customary bang. However, there were compensations;
    The illuminations throughout the city were more ingenious and extensive than ever before, business was brisk in the bazaars -- particularly at the sweet stalls where stocks were sold out repeatedly - at inflated prices.

    By evening the entire city was caught up in the whirl of festival spirit. Every house was illuminated and the ringing of church bells and the blowing of conches signified that the devout were opening their gates to Goddess Lakshmi to bless them.

    And, for all the 'Roman Candles', 'sparklers' and other ingenious fireworks, the fire service had an easy day -- they made only one call, to a minor fire.
