HARVARD EXECUTIVE: "Your excellency, Walimu Julius Nyerere that extraordinary concern for freedom and justice which you have shown for all people, and especially for your fellow Tanzanians, has caused your life to become a glowing example of compassionateness and human understanding. In your country you are regarded as the father of the nation, a title fittingly bestowed upon you for the sterling and brilliant leadership of your people from colonialism to independence. Although you serve as the chief executive officer of your county, you are commonly referred to as Walimu, which means teacher, a most appropriate designation, since you began your career as a schoolteacher and even now you remain a teacher in the broadest sense of that world. You continue to teach the basic concepts of freedom. Harvard University is honoured to recognise you as a champion of freedom, of human dignity, of justice. Therefore by virtue of the authority vested in me by the boar of trustees of Harvard University I do now confer upon you the degree Doctor of Humanities, honours cause, and admit you to all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto. I direct that you be invested with the hood appropriate to this high degree and I present you with this diploma."
