  • Description

Fourteen students were wounded, two seriously, and 75 arrested in a clash with police in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday (19 September).

The trouble started when police were called to intervene in a battle between two groups of students from rival colleges outside the Thailand National Stadium.

As police arrived on the scene the battling students scattered except for a group of over 100 pupils of the Pathumwan Engineering School.

They hurled plastic bombs into the police ranks and police fired warning shots into the air ordering them to disperse.

But instead, more bombs were thrown and it's believed the students started firing on the police.

The police team, armed with carbines and service pistols, fired back as the students rushed into a nearby school compound, took cover and exchanged more shots with police.

Special anti-riot squads were called in. Wearing bullet-proof vests and carrying shotguns, they took up position around the compound.

A gunbattle ensued for some 25 minutes before the last core of students were forced inside the school building where they remained overnight.

Police searched and arrested 75 of the students, including the injured, and they will now face "strict legal action and will be refused bail."
The battle came after months of general political unrest and industrial disorder in Thailand.

Militant right and left-wing Thai students have clashed on several occasions during the past year. Continuous labour strikes, a spate of shootings and bomb incidents have left an uneasy atmosphere in the country, and particularly, Bangkok.

The latest to go on strike are Bangkok's busmen who have been out since Thursday (18 September) night and refuse to go back to work until the Government promises to merge the city's various bus lines into a state enterprise.

The city's entire fleet of 3,000 buses went off the road, and may thousands of commuters were left standard.
