    North Vietnam's Defence Minister General Vo Nguyen Giap talked with Algerian President Houari Boumedienne in the People's palace in the capital Algiers on Friday (9 January).

    During his week long visit General Giap has met leaders of the Polisario Front group who are fighting for the independence of neighbouring Spanish Sahara. Algeria favours the right of the people of Spanish Sahara to run their own country. But since Spain's recent gradual withdrawal Morocco, Mauritania and Spain have agreed to share power in the phosphate rich country.

    Before he left on Saturday (10 January) General Giap said he hoped his visit had reinforced the friendly links between Algeria and Vietnam.

    General Giap toured industrial and agricultural projects as well as armed forces installations in eastern and western algeria during his visit.
