The conflict in the Western Sahara has been at the centre of talks between President William tolbert of Liberia and Morocco's King Hassan. The Liberian President arrived in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, on Saturday (3 November) for several days of talks.
SYNOPSIS: President Tolbert who's Chairman, of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) flew in from Algiers where he attended celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the start of the Algerian revolution against France. At Rabat airport he was met by Moroccan Prime Minister Matti Bouabid.
President Tolbert also met other high ranking Moroccan officials before leaving for the Royal Palace.
While attending the anniversary celebrations in Algiers President Tolbert had discussed the Western Sahara situation with President Chadli Benjedid and leaders of the Polisario Front. The Algerian backed Polisarios want independence for the region, while Morocco claims it as part of its territory.
Recently the fighting is reported to have become more intense. President Tolbert is known to be looking for solution to the conflict.
during his talks with King Hassan the President is believed to have spoken of the need for co-operation. At one stage he told reporters everyone on the African continent and particularly members of the OAU should united to work out their problems. Officially President Tolbert's visit has been described as promoting friendship, unity and solidarity.
