  • Description

In the extreme north of Israel...a Christmas party with a difference. The party was given by Israelis in a Kibbutz right on the border with Lebanon...the guests were Lebanese; Christians who regard the border crossing between the two countries as their life-line.

SYNOPSIS: Alongside the Israeli flag...a Christmas tree goes up. It is at Metula, the northmost Israeli settlement on the border with Lebanon. Israeli troops joined in helping prepare for the party for the Christians. To the Lebanese in the area, the border here is known as "The Good Fence"...without it, they say, they could not have survived.

For the past two and a half years, thousands of Lebanese have used the "Good Fence" border crossing point to enter Israel to work, shop or seek medical attention.

This time, however, the crossing was for a party...arranged by Israelis living in the Kvar Blum Kibutz. And it had all the trimmings of other more commonplace celebrations of Christmas.

The entertainment was provided by the people living on the Kibutz...Christmas trees came by courtesy of Israeli Army and the Forestry Commission.

There were some speeches during the festivities...and all of them looked forward with hope for peace in the Middle East in the New Year. That was another point all seemed agreed on.
