Background: The parents of four-year-old Birgitta Torgreen of Sundsval, Sweden, who appealed to the Queen's surgeon oculist, Sir Stewart Duke-Elder, to save their daughter's sight, have been told he cannot help.

And now Birgitta - who has already lost one eye 0 must lose the other to prevent a malignant tumour spreading to her brain. This diagnosis by Swedish surgeons has been confirmed by Sir Stewart.

Birgitta's case won world-wide sympathy, and all over Scandanavia people raised money for an operation. In her hometown of Sundsval, concerts were held to pay for her mercy trip to Britain. Her family, poor working folk, still hoped for a miracle - that would restore her sight. But now Birgitta's only chance lies in a different kind of operation - one to take away her sight - but perhaps to save her life.
