Background: SOUTH KOREAN STUDENTS STONED POLICE DURING A DEMONSTRATION IN SEOUL AGAINST THE RATIFICATION OF THE NORMALISATION TREATY WITH JAPAN. THE GAS-MASKED POLICE USED TEAR-GAS AND WOODEN CLUBS TO QUELL THE PROTEST. TWO DAYS LATER, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), STUDENTS EXTENDED THE PROTEST BY PUBLICLY BURNING JAPANESE-MADE GOODS.

THE TREATY, SIGNED IN TOKYO ON JUNE 22, NORMALISES RELATIONS BETWEEN JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA AFTER 50 YEARS OF DISCORD. IT SPARKED VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS IN BOTH SEOUL AND TOKYO.

WITH THE SOUTH KOREAN PARLIAMENT DUE TO RATIFY IT ON JULY 12, THE PROTESTS HAVE BEEN MOUNTING. ON TUESDAY, ABOUT 3,000 STUDENTS POURED INTO THE STREETS TO DENOUNCE JAPAN. POLICE MOVED IN QUICKLY AND CLASHES FOLLOWED. THOUGH HEAVILY OUTNUMBERED, THE POLICE FORCED THE STUDENTS TO RETREAT TO A HILLSIDE, WHERE MORE STONES WERE THROWN. MORE THAN 300 ARRESTS WERE MADE.

YESTERDAY, ABOUT 250 STUDENTS EXTENDED THE PROTEST BY BURNING A PILE OF GOODS MADE IN JAPAN. THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO HAD JUST ENDED A 68-HOUR FAST, SANG SOUTH KOREA'S NATIONAL ANTHEM BEFORE SOAKING THE GOODS WITH PETROL AND LIGHTING THEM. THEY SAID THEY WOULD START A NATION-WIDE CAMPAIGN FOR A BOYCOTT OF ALL GOODS IMPORTED FROM JAPAN.

(OPENING UP A VAST NEW MARKET, THE TREATY IS EXPECTED TO BOLSTER SOUTH KOREA'S SAGGING ECONOMY AND REDUCE THE ACUTE UNEMPLOYMENT. HOWEVER, THE SOUTH KOREANS, RECALLING THE 35 YEARS UNDER JAPANESE RULE, STILL FEAR ECONOMIC DOMINATION BY JAPAN.)
