    A MEETING IN NEW DELHI OF CHIEF MINISTERS FROM INDIA'S STATES YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) DECIDED TO RATION FOOD IN EIGHT OF THE COUNTRY'S BIG CITIES.ADULTS LIVING THERE WILL BE LIMITED TO 12 OUNCES (340 GRAMS) OF RICE AND WHEAT A DAY.

    THE MINISTERS MET UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF INDIA'S PRIME MINISTER, MR.LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI.THEY WERE HOPING TO WORK OUT A NATIONAL FOOD POLICY IN THE WAKE OF REPORTS FROM MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY OF GROWING FOOD SHORTAGES.

    THE FOOD MINISTER, MR.C.SUBRAMANIAM, TOLD NEWSMEN AFTERWARDS THAT RATIONING WOULD BEGIN AS SOON AS ARRANGEMENTS COULD BE MADE.HE SAID THAT A MILLION TONS OF RICE AND A MILLION-AND-A-QUARTER TONS OF WHEAT WOULD BE NEEDED ANNUALLY TO FEED THE EIGHT BIG CITIES CONCERNED.

    THE CITIES WHERE RATIONING WILL BE IMPOSED ARE: NEW DELHI, BOMBAY, CALCUTTA, MADRAS, HYDERABAD, BANGALORE, AHMEDABAD, AND KANPUR -- ALL OF WHICH HAVE MORE THAN A MILLION RESIDENTS.MANUAL WORKERS WILL BE ALLOWED TEN PERCENT EXTRA RATION, AND HOTELS FIVE PERCENT.
