Lord Carrington...the British Defence Minister...arrived in Nicosia on Sunday night (3 October) at the start of a two-day visit during which he was to inspect British bases on the Island. Britain also has a 1,000-strong contingent serving with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force on Cyprus.
Lord Carrington was received at the Presidential Palace soon after arrival by President Makarios, and later by Turkish leader...Dr. Kutchuk.
SYNOPSIS: Nicosia Airport last Sunday night as Britain's Defence Minister, Lord Carrington, arrived to begin a two-day visit to British bases on Cyprus and the 1,000-strong contingent serving with the United Nations peacekeeping Force on the Island. He denied reports that he was to discuss British payment for facilities used on Cyprus.
At the Presidential Palace Lord Carrington was welcomed by President Makarios. He was accompanied by Air Marshal Sir Derek Hodgkinson, and the British High Commissioner.
Lord Carrington has also denied speculation that senior NATO officers had moved into the Episkopi Sovereign base region.
In the Turkish quarter of Nicosia Lord Barrington called on the Cypriot Vice-President...Dr. Kutchuk... and was also sat by Mr. Dantash and Mr. Osman Orek, before conversing on defence matters with the Vice-President.
