  • Description

THE 14-STRONG CREW OF THE GERMAN FREIGHTER "MARIA ALTHOFF" WERE RESCUED FROM TWO LIFEBOATS IN THE NORTH SEA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). THEY WERE PICKED UP BY THE DUTCH HARWICH-HOOK FERRY "PRINSES BEATRIX" AND BROUGHT TO THE HOOK OF HOLLAND.

THE CAPTAIN OF THE "MARIA ALTHOFF" SAID LATER THAT THE SHIP WAS ON HER WAY FROM THE FRENCH PORT OF CAMP TO A PORT IN POLAND, CARRYING 1,500 TONS OF GRAIN, WHEN THREE HUGE WAVES HIT THE SHIP.

THE FREIGHTERS BEGAN TO LIST AND THE POSITION GREW WORSE EACH TIME SHE WAS BATTERED BY THE HEAVY SEAS. AFTER FIFTEEN MINUTES THE ORDER TO ABANDON SHIP WAS GIVEN.

THREE HOURS LATER A ROTTERDAM TUG SECURED A LINE TO THE FREIGHTER. IT IS BEING BROUGHT INTO HARBOUR FOR REPAIRS.
