  • Description

THE TRADITIONAL DISPUTE IN BELGIUM BETWEEN THE FRENCH-SPEAKING POPULATION AND FLEMISH-SPEAKERS BROUGHT A LARGE DEMONSTRATION IN BRUSSELS LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) WHEN HUNDREDS OF FRENCH-SPEAKING WALLOONS PROTESTED AGAINST THE TRANSFER OF SIX 'FRENCH' VILLAGES TO FLEMISH ADMINISTRATION IN THE PROVINCE OF LIMBURG.

THE SIX VILLAGES ARE IN THE FOURONS DISTRICT, IN NORTH EAST BELGIUM.

THE VILLAGES ARE ON THE SO-CALLED 'LANGUAGE FRONTIER' WHICH DIVIDES BELGIUM INTO FLEMISH SPEAKING FLANDERSAND AND FRENCH-SPEAKING WALLONIA. THEY WERE TRANSFERRED IN A MOVE TO STRAIGHTEN THE BORDER.

BURGOMASTERS AND ALDERMEN FROM THE SIX VILLAGES WERE GREETED YESTERDAY BY WALLOON SUPPORTERS WHEN THEY ARRIVED IN BRUSSELS TO PROTEST AGAINST THE TRANSFER.

WHILE SUPPORTERS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE TRANSFER, FLEMISH NATIONALISTS HELD A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION. THEY CLAIM THAT THE FOURONS DISTRICT WAS ORIGINALLY FLEMISH AND THE FRENCH LANGUAGE WAS IMPOSED ON IT.
