  • Description

THE OLD GHANA POUND CEASED TO BE LEGAL TENDER AFTER MIDNIGHT ON SATURDAY. THERE WAS A LAST MINUTE RUSH ON THE BANKS AS PEOPLE EXCHANGED THE LAST OF THEIR OLD CURRENCY FOR THE NEW DECIMAL NOTES AND COINS.

MANY BANKS PROVIDED EXTRA COUNTERS AND STAFF TO HANDLE THE EXCHANGE OF THE OLD CURRENCY WHICH HAS BEEN IN USE SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH THE NEW CURRENCY SINCE THE DECIMAL SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED IN JULY LAST YEAR.

ORIGINALLY IT WAS PLANNED THAT THE OLD CURRENCY WOULD CEASE TO BE LEGAL TENDER IN JULY THIS YEAR, BUT THERE WAS STILL SO MUCH OF THE OLD CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION THAT THE TIME WAS EXTENDED.

THE BANK OF GHANA HAS ANNOUNCED THAT COMMERCIAL BANKS AND THE GENERAL POST OFFICE WILL CONTINUE TO EXCHANGE THE OLD CURRENCY AT A DISCOUNT FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS. BUT AFTER THE LAST MINUTE RUSH TO THE EXCHANGE CENTRES IT IS BELIEVED VERY LITTLE OF THE OLD CURRENCY IS STILL IN CIRCULATION.

GHANA USED POUNDS, SHILLINGS AND PENCE FOR MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED YEARS.. THE NEW DECIMAL SYSTEM CONSISTS OF PESEWAS WHICH ARE THE EQUIVALENT OF ONE PENNY, AND CEDIS WHICH ARE WORTH ONE HUNDRED PESEWAS, OR EIGHT SHILLINGS AND FOUR PENCE.
