  • Description

Strict security marked the celebration of the first anniversary of the overthrow of Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Soldiers armed with machine guns patrolled the streets to ensure against student demonstrations. The only anti-government action was the distribution of leaflets by an unspecified popular front. The leaflets called on the Chinese minority to join with them.

Amid the celebration, the Chief of State, Chong Hong, announced in a national radio address that general elections would soon be organised according to the democratic principles of the new republic.

At the National Assembly, acting Premier Sirik Matak reviewed the country's progress. Sirik Matak took over the leadership of Cambodia when General Lon Nol took ill earlier this year. Later, speaking through a senior military spokesman, he declared that Cambodia was now in a state of General Mobilisation, nationwide. Mobilisation was first proclaimed last June, but implementation was left to local commanders.
