    AT PRESENT ABOUT 970,000 PEOPLE LIVE IN OKINAWA, UNDER THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. THE ISLAND WAS HANDED OVER TO AMERICA IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO PEACE TREATY OF 1951.
