  • Description

Lebanese Security forces and rival militia groups clashed again in South Beirut on Thursday (26 June) killing at least 20 people, including a gendarme, and wounding several others.

Lebanese police said the latest casualties brought the toll for the past three days to at least 30 killed and more than 40 wounded in fighting involving rightwing Falangists, leftwingers and the security forces.

The fighting came as Palestinian Commando leader Yasser Arafat met Interior Minister Said Nosrallah to discuss further steps to end the shooting. Two mortar shells fell near Mr. Arafat's office as he was chairing the meeting which was also attended by representatives of guerrilla movements.

A Palestinian spokesman said there was no casualties or damage.

The latest spate of street-fighting between right and leftwing factions erupted on Tuesday after a three-week lull. It follows two major bouts of fighting in April and May which left more than 250 people in a Beirut.
