Background: Record crowds of racing fans will be at Silverstone tomorrow, July 19, -- if the weather stays fine -- for Britain's biggest Grand Prix contest.

All grandstand tickets are sold. But there is room for over 100,000 fans around the three-mile circuit.

This year Britain is almost completely on top in world championship Grand Prix racing. The names of drivers and cars glitter on the race cards - Peter Collins on Ferrari, Mike Hawthorn on Ferrari, Stirling Moss on Vanwall, Tony Brooks on Vanwall, Graham Hill on Lotus.

Silverstone too is the greatest assembly of international drivers - France's Maurice Trintignant on Cooper and Jean Behra on BRM, United States' Harry Schell on BRM, Sweden's Joakim Bonnier on Massrati, Australia's Jack Brabham on Cooper.

Second highlight of the Silverstone Day is the 75-mile race for sports cars - tough battle between Jaguars and the Lister-Jaguars and, in the smaller class, between the various Lotus models.

Then comes the popular Production Touring Car Race in which the cars are easy to recognize - Austins, Rileys, MGs, Jaguars, Fords.

Last on the program the shrill 500cc cars in the swift 17-lap race with a field almost monopolised Coopers.

At Thursday's practice spell, thrilled crowds in sunshine saw Stirling Moss speed his Vanwall round at 106.01 miles an hour in the fastest ever time for a lap: ? minute 39.4 seconds. The record was unofficial as it was made in practice. The race record is 1 minute 40 seconds, 105.37 miles an hour held jointly by Jean Behra BRM and Peter Collins on Ferrari.
