  • Description

Zambia's President Kenneth Kaunda Tuesday (20 November) cancelled all military leave and announced a call-up of reservists to face an intensified onslaught on key economic targets by Zimbabwe Rhodesian forces. The President told a news conference that a wave of recent attacks on vital road and rail bridges by Bishop Abel Muzorewa's forces meant that Zambia was now on a full war alert.

SYNOPSIS: One such vital road link was the bridge in Chongwe--forty kilometres from Lusaka. Last monday (19 November) Zimbabwe Rhodesian forces reduced it to rubble. Sofar President Kaunda's 12 thousand-strong army have been unable to stop the helicopter-borne forces from salisbury, but now some 20,000 more recruits are to boost the army's ranks. No one expects Zambia to attack its battle-hardened neighbour, but President Kaunda's announcement will boost the Patriotic Front guerrillas to whose cause, the President says, he is still very much committed.
