  • Description

Egypt's Cabinet has met in Cairo for the last time, following Thursday's (28 October) elections throughout the country for a new People's General Assembly - the first to be held for 24 years.

SYNOPSIS: The Cabinet meeting took place at the Premier's office in Cairo. Among the first to arrive were the Foreign Minister, Mr. Ismail Fahmy and the Minister for War, General Mohammed El Gamassi. With the latest results, the centrist group of the Prime Minister, General Mamdouh Salem, appeared to have taken a commanding lead More than 1,600 candidates contested the 350 seats in the single chamber Parliament. Among the foremost elected was the Finance Minister, Dr. Ahed Abu Ismail, but the results of polling in the constituency of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohammed Ismail Fahmi, were not fully known. Voting caused some violence. Three people were killed and five injured.

It will be the last time some would meet as members of the Government. Those failing to get an absolute majority will stand for a second ballot on Thursday (4 November). The latest results give Prime Minister Salem's Centrist Group at least 46 seats.

The Minister of Social Affairs, Dr. Aicha Rateb, was one whose future was unknown. The groups standing in the elections are the Social Democrats on the right; the Egyptian Arab Socialists in the centre and the National Progressive Unionists on the left.

The major groups were all formerly part of the Arab Socialist Union which was the only legal party after the military coup which toppled the monarchy in 1952. Two years ago President Sadat promised a return to the multi-party system.
