  • Description

SOMALIA'S TWO-YEAR-OLD CENTRAL AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH STATION HAS ALREADY MADE GREAT STRIDES TOWARD ITS GOAL OF IMPROVING THE COUNTRY'S AGRICULTURAL POSITION. PREVIOUSLY LITTLE WAS KNOWN OF WHAT COULD BE BEST GROWN IN POORLY WATERED DESERT SOIL.

THE STATION IS A JOINT PROJECT OF THE U.S. AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE SOMALI MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE. APART FROM TESTING SOIL SAMPLES VARIOUS TYPES OF PLANTS ARE GRAFTED AND BUDDED TO FIND THE HARDIEST STRAINS CAPABLE OF SURVIVAL UNDER RIGOROUS CONDITIONS.

MANY PLANTS SUCH AS MAIZE, TOMATOES, PINEAPPLES AND ORANGES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH WILL PROVE OF GREAT VALUE TO THE ECONOMY OF SOMALIA. STRAINS OF RICE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL AND CHEAPLY PRODUCED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE IT STOPPED BEING GROWN COMMERCIALLY IN 1949.
